Almost two years ago, we Christmas caroled in a Roma colony nearby. When we saw their enthusiasm, we were moved to begin a ministry there but lots of negative feedback poured in (it is too difficult, if you mess up once they will never receive you again, they only want stuff, there is no place to meet, etc.)
Recently, in doing Priscilla Shirer’s “Armor of God” study, we were confronted with our lack of faith. The fear of failure and discouragement by others kept us from acting. Once we stepped out in faith in what we knew the Lord was asking us to do, the doors began to open. One of our sons is in the tenth grade, and one of his classmates is from this colony. This, by itself, is very unusual, as they don’t generally go past the fourth grade if they even go to school at all. At just 16 he has been married for over two years and now has a child. My son and I took a gift for the baby and had the opportunity to meet the parents. They were very open and excited to have us there and showed us a room in their home that had been used for ministry before the pandemic. A group from central Romania used to come and do services as well as a literacy program.
Since then, we brought children, teens, and adults to our annual VBS in August. We have also met in their home several times to do a children’s program and now we are trying to integrate them into our regular ministry. The first week we had over 40 pack into two vans and it was not the best situation. We pray for wisdom to proceed, but we are encouraged by their zeal and praise the Lord for opening the door to this new ministry!
